cliff, john boehner today put out his own terms for a deal which he says add up to $2.2 trillion in savings. it includes $800 billion in savings from tax reform from closing special interest loopholes and deductions. $600 billion in so-called health savings, which includes changes to medicare. 300 billion other mandatory savings. 300 billion in discretionary savings. this white house shot it down saying this until republicans in congress are willing to get serious about asking the wealthiest to pay higher tax rates, we won't achieve a balance. tonight, tom coburn of oklahoma, a man who's been called one of the keys to reaching a real deal. >> glad to be with you. >> let's begin with this letter that's addressed to the president and comes to majority leader boehner. in this letter, he sort of lays out part of his plan. what do you think of his plan as we've laid out so far? >> i think the first thing that i heard you say is the white house is already reacted negativively to it, which is really concerning to me. look, what he offered was what erskine bowles offered as a compromise

and congress can't make a deal on the so-called fiscal cliff. a source of great concern for so many people, everyone's taxes will go up, will go up if there's no deal. let's go live to our white house correspondent dan lothian. he's on the scene for us over at the white house. how did it go, dan? >> reporter: well, wolf, we've seen the president do this before in the past whenever he's locked in negotiations with lawmakers. he heads out on the road, either goes to a backyard or sits down around a dinner table to put pressure on congress. that's what he did today when he went to falls church sitting down with the santana family. their parents who also are employed live in the household with them. so if taxes do go up on middle class americans, the overall hit on that household will be $4,000. so they're very concerned, but they were quite happy. they said it isn't every day that the president comes by and hangs out at your house. the message the president was trying to drive home today was aimed directly at congress and using this backdrop to tell a personal story. >> for them to be burdene

with the fiscal cliff right now but your point is, if we can get the cost of health care under control we don't need to cut anything right now and there are actually you're saying pilot programs in place thanks to the affordable care act aimed to cut the cost of health care. can you get in to the programs are and how much promise they hold for over the next few years bringing that cost down? >> sure. i mean, you know, it's funny. there's a myth out there that affordable care act, obama care, maybe insurance to a lot of people and didn't do anything about costs. nothing could be further from the truth. it took a lot of money out of health care costs. some of it cutting corporate waste. spending less money to pay private insurance companies offering alternative coverage to medicare patients and a lot of it is pilot programs, experim t experiments. we have lots of ideas for reducing the cost of health care. an example, you know, what if we told hospitals, if you don't run a clean hospital and patients are getting infections, we pay you a little less. hopefully that's incentive to not give these

it will be the democrats. >> it could be. depending on what happens. if they keep posturing we can go off the fiscal cliff it won't be such a big deal i don't think that's where most democrats will end up. you they are president and a lot of people down in washington saying they don't want to go off the fiscal cliff. as far as grover norquist notices, i don't think republicans should be caving to a special interest of one, frankly. we do see some brave republicans coming out there and they should be supported because they are about finding a solution. >> i want to show this tomb the president playing golf with former president bill clinton. how much do you think fiscal cliff was coming up during their golf rounds? >> i'm sure they talked about it because president clinton is a political wonk. what bill clinton showed during his presidency is that there's a way to show common ground with republicans who hate you. they impeached bill clinton but made a deal. they made a deal that was nor the right of where most democrats are. this president has a unique opportunity to make a deal for more towards his left.

st and exactly one month we have to go if they can get a deal to avoid going over the fiscal cliff. everybody says it's going to be an economic catastrophe if we do. an average of $2,200 in extra taxes next year for the average american family. the president has undergone a campaign style series of events. he's had ceos marching up and down the driveway here. he's got a twitter campaign. yesterday he was out in suburban philadelphia asking con stitch wa -- constituents to write in, call, do whatever they need to do to get in touch with those republicans in the house of representatives, try to get them to turn their votes. the president put his first proposal on capitol hill last week. it had $1.6 trillion in new revenues. about half of it coming from ending tax cuts for the wealthy, something that he campaigned on. there are about $600 billion in cuts in domestic programs like medicare. it was greated with gails of laughter by the senate republican leader. here's what the president and the speaker of the house had to say about it yesterday. >> i don't think it's acceptable to you f
